Packing Instruction 620 (PI 620)
Also: PI 620, P620
The packing instruction governing Category A infectious substances under UN2814 and UN2900: UN-certified triple packaging tested to a far higher performance standard than PI 650.
PI 620 packaging is type-approved and carries the UN certification mark. It is triple packaging, as PI 650 is, but the performance requirement is far higher: the package must survive a 9 metre drop test and a puncture test, and an itemised list of contents is placed between the secondary packaging and the outer packaging.
Primary receptacles for liquids are limited to 1 litre and the outer package to 4 litres or 4 kg. Under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations the air limits are tighter again, 50 mL or 50 g per package on passenger aircraft against 4 L or 4 kg on cargo aircraft.
A Category A consignment also needs a Class 6.2 label, a full dangerous-goods declaration, and a trained and current shipper. It needs a carrier that has agreed to accept Category A on that lane before the material is collected. None of that can be arranged on the day.
