UN3245 (Genetically Modified Micro-organisms and Organisms)

Also: UN3245, GMMO, GMO

The Class 9 entry for genetically modified material that is not an infectious substance but is capable of altering animals, plants or micro-organisms in a way that would not normally result from natural reproduction.

Material authorised for use by the competent authorities of the countries of origin, transit and destination is not subject to the entry. Material that also meets the definition of an infectious substance is classified in Class 6.2 instead. For air carriage the relevant packing instruction is PI 959.

The transport classification and the Cartagena Protocol are different obligations with different triggers. A movement can be a transboundary movement of a living modified organism, with its own documentation content requirements, whether or not UN3245 applies. Meeting one does not discharge the other, which is why Determine treats genetic modification as a layer in its own right rather than a flag on the transport outcome.
